Did Jesus come to set people free from sin, from the law, or both?
Jesus came to set captives free. Sin was the master. The law named the problem but could not cleanse it. His death is the gift that breaks both the wage of sin and the yoke of earning your way to God.
You become a slave to whatever you obey. Jesus came to proclaim liberty to captives. Paul then said: if you try to get right with God by going back under the law, you treat Jesus' death as unnecessary.
Salvation is a gift. Receive Jesus. He takes sin off the throne. Then you live as a son, not a slave — following the Spirit, not managing sin as your focus.
Verses
- Luke 4:18-21 — Jesus reads Isaiah 61 and says it is fulfilled in Him — liberty to the captives.
- John 8:34-36 — Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. If the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.
- Romans 6:14, 16, 23 — Not under law but under grace. You are a slave of the one you obey. The gift of God is eternal life.
- Galatians 3:23-25 — The law was a guardian until Christ came.
- Galatians 5:1-4 — For freedom Christ has set us free. Do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
- Galatians 2:16, 21 — If righteousness were through the law, Christ died for no purpose.
- Ephesians 2:8-9 — Saved by grace through faith — the gift of God, not works.
