Where did Moses already promise righteousness apart from the law?
Genesis 15:6. Abram believed God, and it was credited as righteousness — before the law and before circumcision. Grace was never Plan B.
Romans 3:21 says this righteousness is testified by the Law and the Prophets. Paul’s flagship text from Moses is Abraham in Genesis 15, unpacked in Romans 4.
Genesis 12 and 22 promise blessing to the nations through Abraham’s seed — Paul calls that the gospel preached beforehand. Deuteronomy 30 says the word is near you; Paul quotes it in Romans 10 as the righteousness that is by faith.
Even the sacrificial system said covering comes by substitution, not personal merit. The law was not the original pattern. Trusting God was. For the Prophets, Paul’s go-to line is Habakkuk 2:4: the righteous will live by faith.
