Understanding the Bible

Why do I do things I don’t actually want to do?

Paul named that war. Knowing is not power. The Spirit working in you is.

Romans 7 is not a surprise. Wanting one thing and doing another is the human condition under the old master.

Try harder is not the next chapter. Romans 8 is. God does not only stand outside issuing commands. He works inside.

When someone keeps failing, the better question is not only ‘why aren’t you trying harder?’ It is what wound, fear, or belief is producing this — and what the Spirit wants to transform.

Verses

  • Romans 7:15-25I do not do what I want.
  • Romans 8:1-14The Spirit of life.
  • Galatians 5:16-25Walk by the Spirit.
  • Philippians 2:13God works in you.

A next step. Stop at Romans 7 long enough to be honest — then walk into Romans 8.
