What does Jesus mean by ‘I never knew you’ in Matthew 7:23?
The shock is who gets turned away. Not the irreligious. The busy-at-church crowd doing impressive things in His name without the fruit of the Spirit.
They prophesied, cast out demons, did miracles. Activity volume was not the problem Jesus named. He said He never knew them.
The fruit He looks for is the life the Spirit grows — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness. Fruit grows because the tree is alive, not because the branch is straining.
A dead tree cannot fake fruit for long. Fruit is evidence, not currency.
Verses
- Matthew 7:15-23 — I never knew you.
- Galatians 5:22-23 — Fruit of the Spirit.
- John 15:1-8 — Abide. Bear fruit.
A next step. Ask not how busy your faith looks. Ask whether love is actually growing.
